The Definition

What Is a Passport Bro?

A passport bro is a man who dates internationally. He uses his passport to meet, date and often marry women from outside his home country, most often in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. The term took off on TikTok and YouTube in 2022 and has become shorthand for an entire movement.

The idea is older than the hashtag. Servicemen, expats and businessmen have married abroad for generations. What changed is access: remote work, cheap flights, translation in every chat, and video calls that let two people get to know each other before anyone boards a plane.

Passport bros come in every age and income bracket. What they share is a simple conclusion: the right woman may not live in their zip code, and there is no rule that says she has to.

The Visitor

Keeps his job and his home base. Meets women online, then flies out for two or three weeks at a time to see the one he has been talking to.

The Nomad

Works remotely and lives abroad a few months at a time: Medellín this spring, Da Nang in the fall. Dates in every city he calls home.

The Expat

Has relocated for good, or plans to. Building a life in one country, often on remote or retirement income.

The Appeal

Why Men Date Abroad

A Bigger Map

Dating apps search a 50-mile radius. Dating internationally opens the other 99% of the map.

Family-First Cultures

Across Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, relationships are built around family, loyalty and commitment, and courtship is taken seriously by both sides.

Your Money Goes Further

A comfortable month in Cebu, Medellín or Da Nang costs less than rent alone in most US cities. The same income buys a different life.

Foreign Is an Advantage

Abroad, your accent, your background and your story are interesting. Curiosity runs in both directions.

Remote Work Made It Possible

A laptop job turns a two-week trip into a three-month stay, long enough to build something real.

Travel Built In

Every relationship comes with a new country, a new cuisine, a new language and a second family to visit.

Philippines

English-speaking and the easiest first trip
Browse Philippines

The Philippines is where most passport bros start, and the reason is simple: you can talk. English is an official language, taught from first grade, so conversations run deep from the first message with no translator in the middle. Filipinas grow up on American movies, music and basketball, and relationships with foreign men are an everyday sight in Manila, Cebu and Davao.

Family comes first here. Expect to be introduced to parents, siblings and cousins early, and expect that introduction to mean something. Courtship moves at a respectful pace, Sunday is for church and family lunch, and a man who shows up consistently earns real loyalty in return. Cebu is the favorite base: big-city comforts, beaches an hour away, and a slower rhythm than Manila.

Thailand

Effortless travel, gentle culture
Browse Thailand

Thailand has hosted foreign visitors longer than anywhere in the region, and it shows. Bangkok's skytrain, Chiang Mai's cafés and the island ferries make it the smoothest country on this list to move around. Thai women are raised on kreng jai, a deep consideration for other people's feelings, and they respond to men who are calm, polite and well presented.

The women you meet online work in offices, run shops and study at universities in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen, and they expect to be courted properly. English is solid among graduates and thinner elsewhere, so built-in translation does real work in the first weeks. Learn the wai, keep your voice down, and stay composed in public.

Vietnam

Ambitious, family-first and rising fast
Browse Vietnam

Vietnam is the rising star of the passport bro map. Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang are full of young professionals, the food is some of the best in Asia, and costs are the lowest on this list. Vietnamese women are known for drive: many run a side business on top of a day job, and they bring the same seriousness to relationships.

Dating here is intentional. She will want to know your plans early, her parents' opinion carries real weight, and meeting the family is a milestone, not a formality. English is growing quickly among women under 30. US passport holders apply online for an e-visa, which takes a few days and covers stays of up to 90 days.

Colombia

The original passport bro destination
Browse Colombia

Colombia is the original passport bro destination. Medellín, Bogotá and Cali sit three to six hours from most US airports, in the same time zone as New York, so a long weekend is realistic and a daily video call fits into a normal evening. Colombian women are warm, expressive and proud of how they present themselves, and they appreciate a man who does the same.

Romance here is traditional: you plan the date, you pay, you walk her home. Dancing matters, so a few salsa lessons pay for themselves. Spanish is the working language and English is limited outside business circles, which means the men who learn do best. Start with translated messages, move to video calls, and have fifty phrases ready by the time you land.

Brazil

Big, social and full of life
Browse Brazil

Brazil is a continent of its own: more than 200 million people, beach cities and megacities, and one of the most social cultures on earth. Conversations start easily, affection is open, and a Brazilian woman tells you exactly where you stand. São Paulo is the professional hub, Rio is the postcard, and Florianópolis is where remote workers settle.

Portuguese is essential. English is rarer than most visitors expect, which makes the men who learn even a little stand out immediately. US passport holders need an e-visa before boarding; it is issued online, lasts ten years and covers 90-day stays. Build the connection over video first, because Brazil rewards the man who arrives already knowing someone.

Ukrainian women have been at the center of international dating for thirty years. They are highly educated, take pride in style and home alike, and are direct about what they want: a stable, committed partner. Bring flowers, in odd numbers, dress well and say what you mean.

These relationships start on video. Many Ukrainian women now live across Poland, Germany, Czechia and Romania, and first meetings commonly happen in Warsaw, Kraków or Bucharest, all of which US passport holders enter visa-free. English is common among women under 35.

Romania

Latin warmth inside the EU
Browse Romania

Romania is Europe's overlooked answer: a Latin language and temperament, Eastern European family values, and EU infrastructure. Bucharest, Cluj and Timișoara are safe, walkable and fast (Romanian internet is among the quickest in the world), which is why remote workers keep extending their stays.

Romanian women are educated, multilingual and expressive. English is widely spoken, so conversation flows from the first message, and romance is expected: flowers, real dates, clear intentions. US passport holders get 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, which Romania joined in full in 2025.
